Doney den Ouden wrote about some simple changes that Apple should make to iOS 7 to make its design a lot more attractive and more consistent. On the whole, I agree with what he said and I think that what he suggested looked very awesome.

Right up until they announce iOS 7, this is a really great keynote.

Apple announced OS X Mavericks, which will see Maps and iBooks come to the Mac alongside an improved Finder and Safari as well as some performance improvements. They announced some new Mac hardware - a new MacBook Air with an all day battery life and a radically advanced new Mac Pro. They even announced iWork for iCloud, a web based version of their productivity suite.

But then it came to iOS 7, and the magic began to fade. It’s ugly. It’s complex looking and loses some of its intuitiveness. It looks like it was made by five year olds, for five year olds. It does come with some awesome new features, but they’re lost among the horribly designed interface. Apple shocked and disappointed me with iOS 7 and it’s an update I think I’ll pass on.

Imagine the look on some people’s faces if this was real.

Did you know that to cycle through an app’s windows in OS X, all you need to do hit ⌘ and ~? I don’t know if I’m an idiot, but I sure didn’t until today.

I really love simple blogging solutions (even though I’ve begun to really like the ways of Tumblr), and another one just launched yesterday. Roon has a really simple UI, an iPhone app and blogs are just beautiful. Here’s mine and here’s a post I wrote about what I’d like to see at WWDC tomorrow to check it out.

Apple is about to put up the iOS 7 banners. I don’t think I’m in love with the logo they’ve chosen; I prefer the older icon style logos and I’m not the biggest fan of Helvetica Neue Light, but I hope that’s not a sign of things to come.

I think that WWDC banners are pretty fun (I love any kind of Apple banners), and this is a fun look into them. I think the prods at Microsoft were especially fun.

The future of iOS design:

To me, there is a distinct movement towards a particular style and I would be very surprised if Apple were ignorant of it. It’s not “flat design” per se and it’s certainly nowhere near the “Metro” levels that people are suggesting they may follow, but it’s a mellowing out of the visual indicators that people need to trigger the idea of a tappable element.

This is exactly what I want to see coming from iOS 7. Not completely flat, but fresh and less bitty.
